Spoleto is located at the southern end of Valle Umbra, a vast alluvial plain created in prehistoric times by the presence of a vast lake, lacus Umbero, finally dried up in the Middle Ages, after his impaludamento, with the reclamation works. The city has developed on the hill Sant'Elia, a low promontory at the foot of the hill Monteluco, and further down to the banks of the river Tessino, east and surrounded by mountains that surround the Valnerina. Spoleto is an ancient settlement since prehistoric times. The first evidence indicating that Spoleto was inhabited at least since the seventh century BC by Umbrians, as attested ancient tombs dating back to 'Iron Age. The polygonal walls of the fifth century a.C. consisting of huge blocks of limestone show that this was a city well fortified and fitted, in a dominant position on the Umbrian valley.
